intertwined in a mass of
billions
I claw at the ones nearest me
trying hard to keep my naked
feet
from touching the shit and
piss
mixed into the muddy ground
beneath
constantly slipping in pools
of puss
oozing from the infected flesh
of faceless rungs staring as I
pull
a file from my ass sharpening
my teeth and nails to better
grip
cartilage and bone on my next
ascent
disregarding my own wounds
as others dig deep into my
back
where my tongue can't reach
to sterilize the brutality of
natural selection
