NEWS/CONFESSION,
2009. The main character in my
novel, Louis Kemp, is not . . . well, he's not exactly a fictional character. In fact the novel is based on the Taipei experience
of a real person, who at the end of the 1990s agreed to let me use his story,
but who last year, after returning to Taiwan, told me he wasn't happy with
certain things I did with the book.
He asked me, somewhat oddly, if he could edit it chapter by chapter to
bring it more in line with his actual memories. I was curious what he would do, so I said
yes, and even agreed to a further request: he wanted me to post his edited
version on my blog. Truth is,
knowing Louis, I didn't think he'd get very far into such a rewrite. And he hasn't, at least not yet. A handful of his first chapters start
